Ventral Hernias (Umbilical & Epigastric)

What are Ventral Hernias?
Ventral hernias are abdominal wall defects that occur along the midline. Umbilical hernias form around or through the belly button, whereas epigastric hernias appear between the belly button and the lower ribcage. They often present as a visible bulge that becomes more noticeable when standing, coughing, or straining.
Treatment Options:
Primary Tissue Closure (Meshless): Ideal for small defect sizes (< 1–2 cm) where native fascial layers can be sutured securely without tension.
Robotic Sublay / Extraperitoneal Repair: For medium-to-large ventral hernias, robotic keyhole techniques allow mesh placement safely behind the abdominal muscle layers (Rives-Stoppa approach) without touching internal organs.
